Solar energy has been around for years. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals have given the opportunity for major corporations to think about switching to renewable energy, and some famous companies have already done so. These companies are inspirations to many who are looking to make that big move into alternative solutions. They are influential in many ways, but most notably contributing to a better earth. Here are some of those famous companies relying on solar.
One of the most popular retail supermarkets in the United States, Walmart is currently running at 208.9 MW in solar capacity. They have solars installed in two of their distribution centres and around 19 stores. Because of this, the retail giant has become one of the top solar users in the United States.
Ever since the beginning, Apple has been one of the forefront technology companies that champion innovation. However, when it comes to renewable energy, they did not let themselves be left behind. In 2018, they announced that they are now running in 100% renewable energy worldwide. ”We’re committed to leaving the world better than we found it,” CEO Tim Cook said. “ After years of hard work, we’re proud to have reached this significant milestone.”
A leading company at the forefront of renewable energy, the group has already installed more than 900,000 solar panels in its stores worldwide. Recently, the group is still aiming to invest billions in solar power by 2030. They have begun the investments in India, which they plan to run its stores in 100% renewable energy as early as 2025. “We have already come a long way, and in this critical decade, we need to come together to accelerate a just transition to a society powered by renewable energy,” said Chief Sustainable Officer PIa Heidenmark Cook.
E-commerce is now the driving force of the current market during these uncertain times, and Amazon is well aware of its influence and leadership in technology and innovation. Just last month in June, Amazon now holds the title of the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the United States. They aim for their projects in the States, Canada, Finland, and Spain to run 100% renewable energy by 2025.
The retail giant began its road to sustainability early in 2017 when it started using power attained from wind energy. Last year in 2020, they started installing rooftop solar panels in 500 of their stores. “We’re proud of the work we’ve already done with renewable energy in our stores, and we’ll continue to explore more opportunities and partnerships to realize this goal,” VP of Property Management John Leisen in their official statement to go fully renewable.
